It's been a while since we last heard from Smokin' Sessions, but today we're blessed with a truly special release from none other than Smokin' Sessions legend, Rowl with his EP 'Asterism'
Many of you may remember his debut on the label over ten years ago in 2011. Since then, Rowl has become a prominent artist on both Smokin' Sessions and Deep Heads roster, with a number of amazing releases under his belt. Classics like 'lunar', 'Jupiter', 'Thorey of one', and 'Solstice', all with Versa, are sure to bring back memories for our long-time fans. Rowl also graced us with his incredible EP 'Cosmic Visions' back in 2013, a true gem in our catalog.
This time, with his latest EP, Rowl brings us back to the sound that many of our early fans will resonate with. His interpretation of dubstep features heavy 2step beats and a sound that was exploding around 2010-2015. The music is essentially 140BPM, with loads of subs, garage-influenced beats, and melodies, all engineered and mixed with wizardry finishes by Rowl. The sound pushes into new Electronic // Ambient territory that many of our favorite artists like Azeleh, Pensees, Phaeleh, and Synkro are currently exploring. You can hear the influences of previous artists, like Burial, Synkro, and Todd Edwards, who have touched on similar musical inspiration. Whether you call it ambient, 2step, bass, electronic, or otherwise, this is the classic sound of Smokin' Sessions.
The EP kicks off with 'Arcade', a track that truly embodies this sound, drenched in sub-low frequencies and incredible beat work. The dreamlike pads and melodies perfectly complement the rolling rhythm, creating an instant sessions roller.
Moving on to 'Dragon Fly', it's a straight-up ambient 2step bass-heavy recording, with impressive beatwork and tons of warmth to keep you locked in and hypnotised. Heavy influences of garage underpin the production, and the drop is an absolute force. Rowl's production, composition, and programming levels have reached new heights in this track.
The EP ends with 'Watchin Dub', a true heads recording with deep rolling subs and skippy beats that will keep you nodding along until the very end.
This EP is the type of music our label was built for, and we really hope our original Sessions massive vibe on this stellar release. We can't wait for you to hear it.
